Under 21’s Draw Against Aghyaran

Our Under 21’s made the journey to Aghyaran today for their fourth fixture in the U21 Grade 2B league, coming away with a single league point as the game finished a draw. The young Sarsfields were working hard to get a foothold in the game from the start and their workrate was rewarded as Shane Devine hit the first point of the game. Drumragh’s high intensity was paying dividends at this point and this saw them extend their lead, Dean Carroll finishing to the back of the Aghyaran net following great interplay between Ciaran Donaghey and Ronan Maguire. Aghyaran full forward Benny Gallen converted two free kicks to close the gap however good defensive play from Mark Carroll and James Broderick restricted further scoring opportunities for the home team.

Aaron Montgomery added four points for Drumragh approaching half time however Aghyaran cut the deficit with a goal of their own from half back Ryan Hilley. The Sarsfields added three more points before the whistle; a point from Eamon Rea and two frees converted by Montgomery which left the half time score at 1-8 to 1-4.

Drumragh started brightly in the second half with Montgomery adding another point to the board. Aghyaran responded though and were able to press high into the Sarsfields half for most of the second period. Darragh O’Kane and Michael Roche amongst others had a strong showing to stop many of the home team’s advances. The gap remained at four points for the majority of the half with both teams swapping scores including two great points from Ronan Maguire and Montgomery.

As the final whistle approached, Aghyaran were still creating chances and were eventually rewarded for their intensity as they hit the back of the Drumragh net. Another point for Aghyaran concluded the scoring, leaving the final score Drumragh 1-11, Aghyaran 2-08.

A great team showing across the pitch with strong performances in the forward line from Eamon Rea, Ronan Maguire and Andy Colgan. Goalkeeper Charlie Colton made a couple of great saves with the defensive unit dealing well with many Aghyaran attacks. The lads can be pleased with their overall display ahead of their final group game against Derrylaughan next weekend.
