Drumragh U14 girls suffered their first defeat of the season in Castlederg on Tuesday

Drumragh U14 girls were beaten by Castlederg in the league on Tuesday evening.

The first twenty minutes of the game was a tight affair with defences mostly on top, Lily O’Kane, Cara Kerlin and Fionnuala Clarke prominent for Drumragh.

It was Castlederg who did open the scoring with a point but Drumragh responded well with three points on the spin from Rihanna Mullin, with Dana Coyle, Fionnuala Barrett and Grace McCusker providing the final pass for each score.

Drumragh continued to defend well with Cora Walsh, Mia Feeney and Fianna McGuigan stopping several Castlederg attacks.

Castlederg were soon level with a couple of points and they then retook the lead with the game’s first goal. Genevieve Norris was very unlucky not to answer that with a goal of her own, narrowly shooting wide after a surging run that began in her own full-back line.

The teams swapped goals, Grace McCusker on target for Drumragh after good play from Rihanna Mullin and Cara McManus, but a further two goals before the break gave Castlederg a nine-point lead at half-time.

A foul on Dana Coyle allowed Rihanna Mullin to kick over a free at the start of the second half and she quickly added a nice score from play. Mia Feeney also got through for a fantastic individual point having caught a kickout at midfield.

Castlederg came back strong, however, with three goals on the bounce. And it took strong defending from Cara Kerlin, Cora Walsh and Lily O’Kane to prevent the Derg from scoring further goals. Goalkeeper Olivia Kelly also did well to deal with a couple of high balls into the area.

Drumragh did not give up and kept attacking. Rihanna Mullin converted a long-range free after another foul on Dana Coyle before Genevieve Norris scored Drumragh’s second goal after she was played in by Coblaith Murphy.

Sadhbh Duncan and Fionnuala Barrett then combined a couple of times to set up Rihanna Mullin and Dana Coyle for a point from play each.

Coblaith Murphy, Tammy Donnell and Chloe McGale did well to create goalscoring opportunities for themselves and were unlucky not to find the back of the net.

Castlederg added a goal and a point in injury time to complete their win.
