Drumragh U17 boys were beaten in their first league game on Thursday evening

Drumragh U17 boys lost out to Beragh at Clanabogan in the league on Thursday.

A close first half saw Beragh lead by a point at the break, a penalty on the stroke of half-time giving them their first lead of the game.

The teams went score for score early on. Cormac Dolan had opened the scoring for Drumragh after a nice point after a couple of minutes. Good pressure from Eoin Coyle, Brendan Quinn and Aaron Lynch in the forward line forced the Beragh defence into a mistake, allowing Cormac the chance to kick the ball over the bar.

Beragh replied with a good point but Niall McCarney restored Drumragh’s lead from a long-range free after Kian Murphy was fouled.

Both sides had chances. Matthew O’Donnell, Blaine Feeney and Cormac McCann started the game well in the Drumragh defence, Ryan Montgomery and Eoin Coyle were winning plenty of ball around midfield and Drumragh were unlucky not to add to their total early on.

Drumragh soon got in for their goal through Kian Murphy, who fired the ball to the back of the net after a strong run and pass from Ben Monk.

Two points in a row from Beragh brought it back to a one-point game, but Cahir McAnenley set Niall McCarney up for a lovely score from distance.

But it was the away side who went in ahead at half-time thanks to that penalty.

Beragh got the second half’s first score but a couple of good efforts from Kian Murphy brought the teams level once again.

Beragh upped the pressure and Drumragh defenders Sean O’Kane and Carraig McKenna had to cut out a few dangerous attacks as they threatened. Goalkeeper Sean O’Doherty also pulled off a couple of briliant saves.

They did in for a goal though and tagged on three points to really take control of the game.

A third goal late on put the game beyond Drumragh who had further scores from Kian Murphy (2) and Aaron Lynch before the full-time whistle.
