Aoibhinn Gallagher in possession for Drumragh minor ladies against Dromore

Drumragh minor ladies couldn’t overcome a strong Dromore side in their league opener in Dromore on Tuesday evening.

A quiet start from the Drumragh side saw Dromore with a flurry of goals to take the lead from the outset. Keeper Aine McCrory did well under the pressure from a relentless Dromore side and offered some great kick outs to the middle of the park. From the first half water break, the Drumragh side came out in force and put up a very strong performance, outscoring the hosts in the second quarter of the game.

The ladies worked extremely well as a team under the warm evening sun. Points were picked off in the first half by Saoirse Mullin and Sorcha McKenna, both from frees and open play.

Julieanne Quinn and Aiobhinn Gallagher made some determined runs from the centre of the park to link up play and get the ball to the forward line.

Caoimhe McCarron, Kayla Molloy and Therese McManus made some determined runs in the forward lines, creating space for their own team mates, and indeed work for the Dromore defence. Likewise, the Drumragh defence also worked hard to keep the scoreline settled with Cassie McCabe, Iona Mills and Josie Hughes all working hard to cut out any playmaking runs from the Dromore attack.

The hard work paid off as Emma-Cait Gallagher got a goal from a well worked team effort in the 29th minute. The goal spurred the team on and a misplaced Dromore kick out was won at the opposition’s 45m line by Josie Hughes and worked up the pitch to be converted to a point by Saoirse Mullin.

Mia Gallagher on a forward run for Drumragh

Drumragh started the third quarter very well, holding the home side scoreless until the 14th minute. Great defending and tackling from Mia and Evie Gallagher kept the pressure on throughout the second half. Some great defending from Iona Mills and Josie Hughes saw away Dromore attacks early on with some great turnovers being made on the half back line.

Eimear Mullin and Caoimhe McCarron both worked extremely hard in the full forward line, with Caoimhe getting a point in the fourth minute of the second half. The movement of Sorcha McKenna and Alisha Brophy in the half back line created a lot of opportunity for the Drumragh side moving forward. The girls were unlucky to not hit the back of the net again throughout the second half. Emma Cox and Saoirse Mullin worked hard to create movement and opportunities in the forward line for the runners coming through.

In the 30th minute of the second half, Dromore gained some momentum. However, their goal chance was met with a great save from Aine MacCrory to deny the Dromore side. In the 33rd minute, a ball was won in the middle of the park by Julieanne Quinn who was supported off the shoulder by AoIbhinn Gallagher. Gallagher gave a great ball to Saoirse Mullin and this was converted to a point by Caoimhe McCarron. This was a well worked team effort and a Drumragh point from a free in the 35th minute saw the game come to a close.
