Drumragh senior ladies beat Castlederg in the league on Saturday

CASTLEDERG……….0-5
DRUMRAGH…………1-12

Drumragh senior ladies produced an impressive performance to earn their first win of the season away to Castlederg on Saturday evening.

A fully deserved win for Drumragh who played some great football throughout the game, kicking some fantastic scores along the way.

It was the home side who opened the scoring, they had other chances too but Claire McLaughlin, Neamh Cleary and Coblaith McKenna were able to turn the ball over just as it looked like Castlederg would add to their total.

Drumragh didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser though and it came from Breanna Breslin after Beth Donaghy and Rachel Cleary set up the chance for her. Breanna then turned provider for Nicola Taggart to put Drumragh ahead. It was a lead they would never lose.

A quick counter-attack involving Julieanne Quinn, Joanne Barrett and Grace O’Neill ended with another score from Nicola Taggart, to which Castlederg responded with a point of their own.

But from then to the end of the half, Drumragh were in control. Beth Donaghy exchanged passes with Rachel Cleary before firing over, Neamh Cleary sent over an inspirational score while Nicola Taggart added another.

When Castlederg did attack, the Drumragh defence held out with Claire McLaughlin and Blanaid McGarvey particularly impressive in the full back line. Drumragh goalkeeper Clodagh Loughran also did brilliantly to prevent a Castlederg goal, and she quickly started another attack which ended with a Beth Donaghy point.

Caoimhe McCarron concluded the scoring in the first half with a nice point having run onto Nicola Taggart’s pass.

Drumragh got off to the perfect start to the second half with Rachel Cleary scoring the only goal of the contest, Mia Gallagher and Joanne Barrett involved in the build up. Castlederg answered back with a point and other chances were kept out thanks to Neamh Cleary and Blanaid McGarvey.

Having been fouled, Neamh Cleary took the free quickly, finding Beth Donaghy in space, who then put the ball over the bar. Again, Castlederg answered back but Drumragh then went on to score what was a brilliant team point. Joanne Barrett started it by winning the ball back in the full-back line, from there it moved up the field through the hands of the McKenna sisters Coblaith and Sorcha, Iona Mills, Beth Donaghy and eventually Evie Gallagher who made no mistake with the finish.

Helped by the introduction of the substitutes, Drumragh kept up the pressure right to full time. Neamh Cleary set up Beth Donaghy for a point before Sorcha McKenna converted a free after Mia Gallagher had been fouled having done well to win a long ball in. The referee blew the full-time whistle from the kickout, completing a very good Drumragh win.
