Drumragh U15 boys before their championship game against Pomeroy on Saturday

Drumragh U15 boys were beaten by Pomeroy in the championship on Saturday. It was a strong display from Drumragh who played plenty of good football throughout the hour.

Pomeroy built up a 1-4 to no score lead early on, although Drumragh were unlucky not to score in the opening minutes with James Fyffe striking the crossbar after brilliant play took him past a few defenders.

Strong defending from Matthew Barrett, Conor McLaughlin and Ronan Bresnahan prevented Pomeroy from stretching out their lead. Drumragh then got on the scoreboard with a good point from Conor Gormley, with Dylan Lowry, Frankie Monk and Oran Barrett involved in the build-up.

The home side scored the next three points but Drumragh responded with a brilliant goal. Conor Gormley took a mark at midfield, and his long ball inside was smartly flicked on by Dylan Lowry into path of Conor Fyffe who impressively finished soccer-style past the Pomeroy goalkeeper to the back of the net.

Drumragh followed that up with a Conor Gormley free after a move featuring Frankie Monk, Ryan Baxter and Oran Barrett ended with a foul on Conor Fyffe. Pomeroy finished out the half with a couple of points.

From the throw-in to the second half, Pomeroy increased their lead with a goal and tagged on a couple of points. But Drumragh answered back with a goal from Ryan Baxter. Conor Gormley’s pass inside found Ryan in a bit of space and he made no mistake with a terrific finish into the top corner of the net.

The game was end-to-end at this stage. Lorcan McGrath, Shea Mullin and Conor McLaughlin dealt well with a couple of dangerous Pomeroy attacks while the home side’s goalkeeper made a good save to deny Drumragh a goal.

The teams traded points, Conor Gormley on target twice for Drumragh, once from a free and the other an excellent score with the outside of his right foot after Dara Cox and Frankie Monk had created the chance.

Pomeroy kicked a number of points while Lorcan McGrath drove through the home defence, exchanged passes with Conor McLaughlin and fired over for a brilliant point.

Drumragh kept fighting – helped by the introduction of subs – and got in for their third goal when Joseph Taggart did brilliantly to set up Conor Fyffe for the score.

At the other end of the field, Drumragh goalkeeper Matthew O’Doherty made a couple of excellent saves. One of those saves started a move where Dylan Lowry kicked a great score while Aidan McCarney scored a cracking goal after more good play from Frankie Monk, Dylan and Joseph Taggart.

Pomeroy added a few scores before the final whistle and progressed to the next round despite a battling performance from Drumragh.
