Drumragh U16 girls beaten in final league game

Drumragh U16 girls finished third in the league table, just missing out on a final place

Drumragh U16 girls lost out to Coalisland in the league on Tuesday.

It was a credit to both teams that they were able to produce such an entertaining game in what were wet, Autumnal conditions.

Drumragh got off to a strong start and took the lead with a well-worked point from Caoimhe McCarron. That was quickly followed up by a rocket of a goal from Cara McManus and then another three-pointer from Caoimhe.

It was a confident start from Drumragh with all six forwards taking the fight to Coalisland, prompted by midfielders Mia Feeney and Mairead Corrigan.

The home side got on the scoreboard with a goal and a couple of points, despite the best efforts of Genevieve Norris and Grace McCusker in the Drumragh defence.

Drumragh answered back, however, with goals from Rihanna Barrett and Amy-Lee Burt.

Dana Coyle and Fionnuala Barrett helped Mairead Corrigan pop over a good score while Rihanna Mullin added a goal and a point.

Mairead Corrigan added a score at the start of the second half after good play from Rihanna Barrett and Mia Feeney. The full-back line of Lily O’Kane, Genevieve Norris and Fianna McGuigan started the second half superbly, snuffing out a number of dangerous Coalisland attacks.

Rihanna Mullin added a point although Coalisland responded with a scoring burst. Drumragh goalkeeper Nora McCloskey also made an incredible save in this period, turning a rasping shot from a Coalisland attacker over the bar.

Drumragh introduced a number of substitutes and each one made an impact. Caoimhe McCarron kicked a point and soon added another after a strong run out of defence from Lily O’Kane.

Cara Kerlin and Emma McCloskey combined to set up a chance for Rihanna Mullin, and she made no mistake from long-range for a point.

Caoimhe McCarron and Amy-Lee Burt increased Drumragh’s total with excellent points. However, Coalisland finished the game on the front foot and managed to take the lead and held that lead until the final whistle was blown.
