Drumragh U16 boys beat Urney at Clanabogan Park on Saturday morning

Drumragh U16 boys picked up their first win of the season with an impressive victory over Urney at Clanabogan Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was Urney who had the game’s opening attack, and they got into a promising position, but Shea Mullin managed to turn the ball over and clear the danger. That set the tone for what was a very good defensive display with Connor McLaughlin, Frankie Monk and Ryan Baxter winning the ball back on numerous occasions in the opening 10 minutes.

Drumragh went ahead thanks to a wonderful point from Dara Cox, who burst past a couple of defenders before confidently slotting the ball over the bar.

A foul on James Fyffe allowed Conor Gormley to double Drumragh’s advantage from a placed ball while Ryan Baxter forced the Urney goalkeeper into a good save.

They didn’t have to wait long for a goal though with Dylan Lowry firing past the goalkeeper off the ground.

Drumragh were playing well, but kept it tight at the back too with the efforts of Lorcan McGrath and Matthew Barrett helping protect the lead.

Midway through the half, full-back Ronan Bresnahan won the ball back, and a quick counter-attack involving Dylan Lowry, Oran Barrett and Frankie Monk ended with Aidan McCarney hitting a stylish score.

Dara Cox was on target twice, Dylan Lowry pointed while Conor Gormley converted another free as Drumragh increased their lead.

Urney hit a nice point from distance and found Drumragh goalkeeper Matthew O’Doherty in good form when they managed to create a few goal chances.

Another team move saw Ryan Baxter get himself on the scoreboard, while Dara Cox and Frankie Monk kicked points before the end of the half.

Drumragh got the scoreboard going again at the start of the second half thanks to a brilliant point from out the field by Ryan Baxter. Dara Cox followed that up with the second goal of the game after good play from Shea Donnell and Frankie Monk.

Conor Gormley hit an excellent free over the bar with the outside of his right foot, and his brother Niall kicked a good point after bursting past his marker. Joseph Taggart with a free – after he had been fouled – and Connor McLaughlin added to Drumragh’s total nearing the end of the game.

Urney had a number of good attacks with Drumragh defenders Matthew Barrett, Lorcan McGrath and Ronan Bresnahan needing to be alert.

Drumragh brought on a number of substitutes and they all helped keep up the pressure until the final whistle. Conor Gormley concluded the scoring with a good point, completing an excellent Drumragh performance.
