Match report from the Girls Championship Final v Ardboe-
Like the London buses, you wait ages for a Drumragh team to win a trophy and then another one comes along almost immediately.
On Tuesday evening up at Garvaghey, it was the turn of the U16 girls to win some silverware as they beat Ardboe in the Grade 3 Championship final. The final score was 8-12 to 3-3.
It was another fantastic performance from us although I don’t think it was as one-sided as the final score would suggest. Ardboe had a couple of very good forwards and had plenty of possession and attacks. But our defence was excellent throughout and kept them to a low enough score with Emma Donaghey, Josephine Quinn and Emma Lynch standing out.
We did well up front too and looked dangerous every time we went forward. To score 8-10 in a county final is good going and it could have been more but for a few good saves from the Ardboe goalkeeper and a couple of shots dropped short.
Some of the scores we got too were fantastic with Eva McCaul and the McSorley sisters Claire and Ellen particularly prominent. Eva converted a penalty late on right into the top corner of the net. You will go a long way before you see a better one.
We led 4-5 to 2-1 at half-time with the highlight of the half two brilliant individual goals from Claire and Kathryn Donaghey. One of the Ardboe goals was terrific as well with a good run through our defence ended with a great finish.
Ardboe started the second half very well and closed the gap to only six points. They had all the momentum at this point and we were struggling to get out of our own half. But again some good defending from us meant they didn’t get any closer.
A couple of points from Ellen and Claire midway through the half settled us and from there on, we were in complete control. We finished the game in style too scoring three goals in the last couple of minutes.
Our full list of scorers were Clare McSorley 3-4, Eva McCaul 1-5, Ellen McSorley 2-1, Kathryn Donaghey 1-1, Coblaith McKenna 1-0, Aoife Marshall 0-1
Hopefully, this is just part one of a double as the girls play Badoney in the Grade 3 league final this week. Venue, date and time are yet to be decided.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Josephine Quinn
