Our Under 21’s claimed both league points in their final group game today against Derrylaughan. However, it was the visiting lough shore team that made the better start in the game, hitting the back of the Drumragh net in the fourth minute which was quickly followed up with a further two points. The young Sarsfields team responded well with points from Eamon Rea and Ronan Maguire opening the home team’s scoring. Drumragh were working well at this point and some great play allowed Aaron Montgomery, Eoghan Rea and Darragh O’Kane to add further scores to the board and take the lead.
Derrylaughan looked sharp on the break and were able to take advantage of a couple of turnovers to close the gap, adding two points to their total approaching half time. Drumragh were pushing for further scores and, following some good play from Matthew O’Neill and Eamon Rea, were rewarded with a goal from Shane Devine. This left two points between the teams at half time, 1-6 to 1-4 to the home team.
Drumragh started brightly in the second half with Shane Devine scoring a point from the throw in. It was Derrylaughan that got the next score of the half, their second goal which was the result of an unlucky defensive error. The Sarsfields pushed on well however and some positive offensive play saw Drumragh take a four point lead, thanks to scores from Eoghan Rea, Aaron Montgomery and Shane Devine.
The game was end to end throughout the second half and opened up further as both teams lost players due to a combination of black and yellow cards. The away team scored two further points on the break to close the gap however it was Drumragh that ended the game strongly. Malachy McManus, Aaron Montgomery and Darragh O’Kane all shot accurately approaching full time to seal the win for the Sarsfields and therefore qualification into the Quarter Finals.
This was a great team showing across the pitch with strong performances in defence from Michael Roche, Oran Donaghy and Mark Carroll stopping several Derrylaughan attacks. The lads can be pleased with their overall display and will now progress to the Quarter Final which is likely to be against Killeeshil.
