U16 Ladies complete league programme with a win

Drumagh ladies U-16’s completed their league campaign with a fine win over Pomeroy on Thursday night at a damp Clanabogan Park. The girls were already assured of a place in the League Final however, they were determined to complete their league campaign unbeaten.

Played in tricky underfoot conditions, the young Sarsfields started brightly and Saoirse Mullin pointed from the first attack. Brianna Breslin added a goal two minutes later before the away team opened their account with a fine point. Pomeroy struck back almost immediately with a goal of their own before the home team eased away with four more unanswered points courtesy of Mullin (2) and Sorcha McKenna (2) before Pomeroy scored again with a point after 15 minutes. Drumragh took over after that as Emma Cait Gallagher added a goal and further points from Mullin (3) and Julie Anne Quinn to just a one point response left the half time score Drumragh 2-9 Pomeroy 1-2.

Saoirse Mullin increased the home lead after 35 minutes with a fine point before Aoibheann Rodgers effectively sealed the game a minute later when she fired to the net after great work by Aoibheann Gallagher and Aine Kearney. Further points by Emma Cait Gallagher, McKenna and Quinn increased the lead before goalkeeper Aine MacRory was called into action producing an excellent save from a well struck shot. Pomeroy managed to pull a goal and a point back before further points from Kearney and Mullin left the final score Drumragh 3-15 Pomeroy 2-3.

This was an excellent team performance with some excellent attacking play with Saoirse Mullin, Sorcha McKenna and Julie Quinn leading the line very well with excellent support from Emma Cait Gallagher, Aoibheann Rodgers and Therese McManus. The midfield pairing of Brianna Breslin and Aoibheann Gallagher covered every blade of grass both in attack and defence while Mia Gallagher and Ella Smyth were outstanding in defence ably supported by Carla Mullin, Evie Gallagher, Orla Duncan and Grace Norris. Another feature of the performance was the distribution by Orla Loughran and Aine MacRory in goals.

The entire panel got an opportunity to get some playing time in and while many of the girls are very young, they all acquitted themselves very well.

The girls now have a preliminary championship clash to focus on and of course a league final to look forward to with details to follow.

Drumragh: Orla Loughran; Grace Norris, Mia Gallagher, Carla Mullan; Evie Gallagher, Ella Smyth, Orlaith Duncan; Brianna Breslin (1-0) and Aoibheann Gallagher; Saoirse Mullin (0-8), Sorcha McKenna (0-3), Julie Anne Quinn (0-2); Therese McManus, Aoibheann Rodgers (1-0), Emma Cait Gallagher (1-1)
