Drumragh U16 boys beat Owen Roes away in the league on Saturday morning.
It was a deserved win for Drumragh, who once again performed very well. They got off to a great start with a super score from the opening whistle. Conor Gormley claimed the ball from the throw-in and sent a long ball into Conor Fyffe. Conor won the ball in front of his marker, laid the ball off to the onrushing Dylan Lowry who banged the ball over the bar from distance.
The Drumragh defence started the game well too with Ronan Bresnahan and Ryan Baxter turning the ball over numerous times. Connor McLaughlin also won the ball back to stop a dangerous Owen Roes attack, and from there the ball was moved upfield to Dylan Lowry, who doubled Drumragh’s advantage.
Drumragh goalkeeper Callum McNamee delivered a clever kick-out to Oran Barrett who passed into Conor Gormley, who popped the ball over the bar for point number three. They then stretched out their with the first goal of the game, a wonderful soccer-style finish from midfielder Turlough Collins. They almost immediately found the net again but Ryan Baxter was denied by a good save from the home goalkeeper.
Owen Roes got in for a goal, but Drumragh responded the right way. Conor Fyffe showed good strength to win a long ball in before racing through on goal and kicking a point. Conor Gormley and Oran Barrett then set up Dylan Lowry for a goal.
Aidan McCarney added a brilliant point from play, showing good skill in the build-up by flicking the ball over a defender’s head. Owen Roes answered back with a point but Conor Gormley finished the scoring in the first half with an excellent free from out near the sideline.
Owen Roes opened the scoring in the second half, converting a penalty. But again, Drumragh answered back impressively with Dylan Lowry punching a high ball into the square into the back of the net.
The home side found the net again but Drumragh rattled off three points in the space of two minutes. Aidan McCarney kicked a nice point, Conor Fyffe won the kick-out that followed and put the ball between the posts, while Shay Donnell set up Conor Gormley to score despite being under pressure from a few defenders.
Owen Roes hit two points on the spin, but they were to be their last scores. Matthew Barrett, Oisin Walsh and Ryan Baxter were prominent in keeping out Owen Roes as they looked to close the gap. Shea Mullin also made a brave block to prevent Owen Roes from scoring another goal as the game neared its end.
A brilliant point with the outside of his right foot – from an extremely tight angle – from Conor Gormley gave Drumragh more breathing space, while a fantastic team move involving James Fyffe, Dara Cox and Frankie Monk ended with a lovely score from Aidan McCarney.
A foul on Dara Cox in the last action of the game allowed Conor Gormley to convert a free, securing Drumragh their fourth straight win.
