League defeat for Drumragh U16 girls

Drumragh U16 girls were beaten by St Macartan’s in the league in Augher on Tuesday evening.

The home side got off to a quick start and put a goal and a point on the scoreboard in the opening minutes. Dearbhaille McLaughlin and Rihanna Mullin got the ball to Dana Coyle who scored a good point after a run through the centre of the St Macartan’s defence for Drumragh’s first score.

Despite some great defending from Niamh Colton, Keira McGuigan and Roise McDevitt, St Macartan’s were able to increase their lead by midway through the half.

Drumragh came a bit more into the game as the half progressed. Roisin Gormley did well to win a long ball in from Rihanna Mullin’s to score a goal while Dana Coyle added a point shortly after.

Anna Clarke and Caitlin McCarron combined to prevent a goal for St Macartan’s, while a brave block from full-back Oonagh Pancott did likewise not long after.

The teams swapped goals with Dana Coyle scoring for Drumragh after a quick counter-attack started by goalkeeper Chloe McGale, and involving Rihanna Mullin, Eabha Coyle and Katie McCann. Dana then added a point but it was St Macartan’s who held the lead at half-time.

St Macartan’s opened the scoring in the second half, but Drumragh hit back with a goal when a quick bit of thinking from a free allowed Dana Coyle to fire the ball to the roof of the net.

Drumragh were unlucky not to add to their tally after good play from Roisin Gormley, Keira McGuigan and Olivia Kelly. Rihanna Mullin also forced the St Macartan’s goalkeeper into a great save after being played in by Mollie Starrs.

At the other end of the field, Drumragh defended superbly throughout the second half, led by Caitlin McCarron, Niamh Colton and Anna Clarke. They restricted the St Macartan’s attack well, but the home side did add a few scores late on and claimed the win.
