A good performance from Drumragh U16 girls saw them beat Castlederg away on Tuesday evening. Drumragh had strong displays from all over the pitch in what was an enjoyable game.
The Drumragh defence started the game really well, stopping a number of Castlederg attacks, and in turn setting up ones from Drumragh. Oonagh Pancott, Niamh Colton and Keira McGuigan were prominent in those early efforts.
And that allowed Drumragh to take the lead. Mollie Starrs and Dana Coyle were fouled in consecutive attacks with Rihanna Mullin sending both frees over the bar. Rihanna then ran onto a brilliant pass forward from Dearbahille McLaughlin and planted the ball in the bottom corner for a fantastic goal.
Castlederg got on the scoreboard with two quick scores, but Dana Coyle responded for Drumragh with a point having caught a high ball into the full-forward line. Rihanna Mullin kicked a wonderful point from distance and soon added another following good play in the build-up from Jennifer Barrett and Roisin Gormley.
The home side got on the scoreboard again, but Eabha Coyle concluded the scoring in the first half with a good point having brought the ball past a couple of defenders.
The sides swapped scores at the start of the second half with Dana Coyle responsible for both of Drumragh’s points. And from that second kick-out, Dana won the ball at midfield, ran through the home defence and fired low to the net for a great goal.
Drumragh were defending excellently with Roise McDevitt, Katie McCann and Chloe Colton breaking up numerous Castlederg attacks. Dana Coyle scored a point, while midfielders Dearbhaille McLaughlin and Caitlin McCarron set up Mollie Starrs for a well-worked score. Drumragh were then awarded a penalty when Roisin Gormley was fouled, and Roisin herself stepped up and coolly converted the penalty.
But back came Castlederg, who hit 1-3 unanswered to close the gap. They had a lot of possession in the middle of the half, but Drumragh’s level of defensive work never dropped, with goalkeeper Emelia Lowry also displaying a calmness when put under pressure.
But with Aoibhin Dolan and Eireann Boyle on as replacements, Drumragh finished the game on the front foot. Mollie Starrs put the ball over the bar from a free, while Dana Coyle exchanged passes with Rihanna Mullin before scoring Drumragh’s fourth goal of the game and making sure of the win.
