What a performance. Drumragh ladies are the Junior League champions after a brilliant 2-12 to 1-9 win over Trillick in the final at Fintona last Saturday.
We knew beforehand that we would be playing intermediate football next year no matter what way the result went. But it is fantastic to be doing so on the back of winning a trophy, the first time in six years the senior ladies have done so.
It’s nothing less than they deserved after another great season and it sets us up well for division two football next year.
Once Neamh Woods brought the teams level after Trillick had taken an early lead, we were never behind again. A goal from Leah Quinn, who beat the Trillick goalkeeper to a high ball in, and points from Neamh and Clodagh Loughran saw us go five points in front.
Trillick came back strong though with 1-1 in a short period of time, the goal a very good score after a strong run from their centre-half back who fed their midfielder who found the back of the net.
But Eva McCaul responded with a good point from play and it was point for point until the end of the half with Eva (free) and Katherine McCrory our pointscorers. The half time score was 1-6 to 1-4.
We got off to a great start to the second half with Neamh getting an inspirational score. She won the ball from the throw-in, raced through the Trillick defence before kicking the ball over the bar. Eva quickly added another point but Trillick replied with two points in a row to bring it back to a two-point game.
And then came the crucial moment in the game. Amy Cox had stretched out our lead to three with a nice point from play before putting us firmly in control with the second goal.
And from then on, Trillick couldn’t get within five points of us after that as further points from Leah, Clodagh and Eva meant we held on for what is an historic win.
With this win, added to the various underage successes of the last number of years, I think we can look forward to next year with confidence. Congratulations to Jimmy, Seamus, Captain Neamh and the entire team.
